BORPALOTA Borászati és Borforgalmi Kft (WINE PALACE Winery and Wine Trade Ltd) is in downtown Gyöngyös, in Mátra Wine Region, 80 kilometres from Budapest. The Gyöngyös-Visontai Bortermelők Szövetkezete Rt was founded on May 13th 1900, with 255 business shares and 5781 crowns of stock. An own building and a cellar were needed, so an inn (Oroszlán Vendégfogadó) was bought in downtown Gyöngyös, then on the place of the inn the wine-cellars of the stock company and later on this foundation an office building, a restaurant and a hotel were built. The beautiful building in eclectic style was opened in 1907. At that time the modern wine-cellars under it were suitable for storing 40 000 hectolitres of wine. Even today it is one of the most representative buildings in Gyöngyös, and throughout the historical storms of the last hundred years it has remained what it was originally built for – a wine cellar. Our aim is to become the processing centre of vines growing in Gyöngyös area and in Gyöngyös itself which has considerable wine-growing traditions and to make quality wines satisfying every demand. BORPALOTA, true to its name and to the memory of the founders living hundred years ago, again wants to be the winery centre and the symbol of the wine-growing area and the city and the prime mover of wine tourism in Mátra. Our chief wine-grower is Péter Varga. He does excellent, conscientious work which is reflected in the eminent results of the local, national and international wine competitions in the last few years. In 2008 he was elected the Wine-Grower of the Year in Mátra Wine Region. At the moment there are 140 hectares of vineyard in the cultivation of BORPALOTA, among others Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Italian Riesling, Zefir, Chardonnay and Tramini.
